Lucía Serra is an entrepreneur who has found in Mallorca the perfect corner to intertwine her passion for flowers with her dream of sustainable cultivation. With her project, Serra Flowers, Lucía invites us to discover the island’s natural beauty, turning her garden into a true oasis of creativity and life. A mother of three, she has found in the magical area of Alaró, with its twin guardian mountains, the place where she has been fortunate enough to bring her vision to life.
What led you to move to Mallorca, and how has the experience been so far?
We moved to Mallorca with the goal of finding a balance between our family and professional lives, after having lived in several European cities. We found what we were looking for and are very happy with our decision.
How did you discover your passion for the floral world, and what attracted you to this particular activity?
My love for flowers began in my childhood, influenced by my mother, who instilled in me a deep passion for gardening from a young age. When I moved to Mallorca and gave birth to my third child, I noticed a clear lack of quality local floral options. This inspired me to create a unique offering, with an exclusive selection of cut flowers grown in a sustainable flower garden. Just as I prioritise local and organic products in my diet, I decided to apply the same philosophy to flowers, providing an alternative to imported products.
How has your previous life and your musician husband's life influenced your decision to dedicate yourself to floral cultivation?
Having worked in fashion as a knitwear designer for over ten years, the creative aspect of considering volumes, textures, and colour comes naturally to me, skills which I have transferred to floral design. The real challenge has been cultivation, an area in which I have invested a lot of time in continuous learning. My husband, with his creative life as a musician, has always supported my passion and, when he can, enjoys collaborating on this project, which also allows him to disconnect from his daily routine.
What challenges have you encountered in starting this new project in Mallorca?
Fortunately, everything has been going positively so far. My biggest concern was the intense summer heat in Mallorca, but thanks to careful planning and a suitable selection of varieties with my mother, we have survived the hottest months, with an abundant supply of flowers.
What role has your mother played in your floral cultivation project, and how has working together strengthened your relationship?
This project would be very different without my mother’s collaboration. Her vast knowledge of plants, gardens, and flowers has been invaluable. My wish is that she could spend longer periods here or even move permanently, which would further strengthen our relationship and the success of the project.
Is there any specific place in Mallorca that particularly inspires you?
The Sierra de Tramuntana, with its spectacular landscapes where the mountains meet the sea, is a constant source of inspiration for me. In particular, the area of Alaró, with its magical twin mountains, is where I am fortunate to have my project.
What is your daily routine in the field, and what aspects of the process do you enjoy the most?
My day starts early, especially in summer, and I spend between three and four hours daily in the flower garden. Additionally, I dedicate time to administrative tasks, such as planning, managing orders, and social media. I thoroughly enjoy my Monday walks to see how everything is progressing; you always find pleasant surprises. My dream is to be able to do this walk in my pyjamas with a coffee in hand when the flower garden is in my own home. I also find great satisfaction in the deliveries, knowing that I am bringing a little piece of nature to each client.
How have your children and family influenced your new project and life in Mallorca?
I feel very proud to be engaged in something I fully believe in and that allows me to pass these values on to my children. My middle child, who is three years old, already shows a great interest in the garden, and I love seeing him participate in this environment.
What inspires you most about Romualda?
I have always loved Cristina's work; I remember my parents bought one of her pieces at her first exhibition. Coming from the fashion world, I appreciate how well the garments fit; you feel beautiful in a Romualda dress! The hats, in particular, are a key piece; I have been wearing the peony one all summer to go to the estate because it is truly practical, though I still need to master the peonies I’ve planted!
How do you see yourself reflected in our Romualda world?
Romualda, like Serra Flowers, embodies the idea of "Beauty for the sake of beauty." It is not an essential product in the conventional sense, but it is absolutely indispensable for those who deeply feel the need to surround themselves with beauty and, through it, elevate every aspect of their lives.
Now that the flowers have bloomed, how have you experienced this?
I am filled with pride seeing the fruits of our labour. Cultivating something from seed and, months later, harvesting buckets and buckets of flowers each week is the fulfilment of a dream. My goal is to continue perfecting each season and refining the selection of flowers.
